The Maternity Hospital
The cramped Maternity ward
While we were in Cambodia were given an opportunity to go to the hospital ward and bring food for the patients there. We brought them food because the hospital did not supply them with food which meant that if they did not have any family to support them, they were forced to go without. The condition of the ward really surprised me, I knew that the hospitals wouldn't be flash but i did not realise exactly how unsanitary it would be. Throughout the hospital there was dirt, dust and dried blood on the ground.
In the room we were visiting we met a woman who was holding her new , beautiful daughter Diamond. We also met a woman, with her husband who did not have a baby. When she was asked if she was a Christian she told us that she used to be, and then explained the story. She already had four boys at home but desperately wanted a girl. She then wound up pregnant and gave birth to a beautiful baby girl only to lose her.
My heart broke for this woman. She had always wanted a girl and she was finally blessed with one - only to have her die shortly after. At the back of my mind a single question daunted me. If she lived in Australia, with all of this medical equipment...could she have saved? The most likely answer is 'yes' and it really just shows you how much we truly have.
